Linux Kernel 3.14.1/3.14.2/3.14.3/3.14.4/3.14.5 HugeTLB File System mempolicy.c hugetlb_entry race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel 3.14.1/3.14.2/3.14.3/3.14.4/3.14.5. The affected element is the function hugetlb_entry of the file mempolicy.c of the component HugeTLB File System. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2014-3940. No exploit exists. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 3.14.1/3.14.2/3.14.3/3.14.4/3.14.5 (Operating System). This affects the function hugetlb_entry of the file mempolicy.c of the component HugeTLB File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 03/06/2014 by Prasad J Pandit as Bug 1104097 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3940 since 06/02/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Linux kernel built with the HugeTLB file system(CONFIG_HUGETLBFS + CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGE) along with Non Uniform Memory Access(CONFIG_NUMA) support is vulnerable to possible race conditions. It could occur when kernel attempts to perform hugepage migration.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78491 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Linux kernel vulnerability (SOL15685)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124116 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2015:1272)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lkml.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93561), Tenable (78491), SecurityFocus (BID 67786†), Secunia (SA59011†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46906†). Further details are available at seclists.org. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
