A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Azure DevOps Server and Team Foundation Server (Programming Tool Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been rated as problematic. The bug was discovered 05/14/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2019 as confirmed security update guide (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-0979 since 11/26/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
A Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists when Azure DevOps Server and Team Foundation Server do not properly sanitize user provided input. An authenticated attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending a specially crafted payload to an Azure DevOps server or a Team Foundation server, which will get executed in the context of the user every time a user visits the compromised page.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91530 (Microsoft Team Foundation Server Update for May 2019).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
