Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 7.6.100.16/7.6.110.0 (Wireless LAN Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Discovery Protocol Handler. The manipulation as part of a CDP Packet leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was released 06/06/2014 with Cisco as CSCuo12321 as confirmed security notice (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3291 since 05/07/2014. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
The vulnerability is due to a failure to properly check for certain NULL values present in a CDP packet. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by by submitting crafted CDP requests to an affected device. The attacker would then need to convince a user to preform an SNMP poll of the affected MIB.. An attacker that can convince a user to preform an SNMP poll of the affected MIB could trigger a NULL Pointer error that results in a restart of the device.
The advisory illustrates:
An attacker would need direct Layer-2 access to an affected device. This may also be triggered in circumstances where a non-Cisco switch that does not parse CDP is utilized with a Cisco WLC.
Upgrading to version 7.6.120.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 67926†), Secunia (SA57895†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030410†). Further details are available at tools.cisco.com. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
