Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 6.1/7.1 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code in the library libodm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
libodm.a in IBM AIX 6.1 and 7.1, and VIOS 2.2.x, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a temporary file. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-2179.
The issue has been introduced in 11/09/2007. The weakness was shared 05/23/2014 by Jakub Wartak as libodm_advisory.asc as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at aix.software.ibm.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3977 since 06/05/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Portcullis and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2387 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74193 (AIX 6.1 TL 8 : libodm (IV60311)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120862 (IBM AIX "libodm" File Overwrite Vulnerability). The advisory illustrates:
To determine if your system is vulnerable, execute the following command: lslpp -L bos.rte.odm
Applying the patch IV60313/IV60311/IV60299/IV60312/IV60314/IV60303 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93595), Exploit-DB (33725), Tenable (74193), SecurityFocus (BID 54122†) and OSVDB (83133†).
