A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.14.4 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component IOAcceleratorFamily. A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved input validation. This issue affected versions prior to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, macOS Mojave 10.14.
The bug was discovered 01/03/2019. The weakness was shared 05/13/2019 by Tyler Bohan with Cisco Talos as HT210119 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-4456 since 01/02/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 130 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371369 (Apple macOS Mojave 10.14.2, Security Update 2018-003 High Sierra, Security Update 2018-006 Sierra Not Installed(HT209341)).
Upgrading to version 10.14.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
