Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apple macOS up to 10.14.4 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Microcode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.
The bug was discovered 05/14/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2019 with Microsoft as HT210119 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-12127 since 06/11/2018. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Multiple information disclosure issues were addressed partially by updating the microcode and changing the OS scheduler to isolate the system from web content running in the browser. To completely address these issues, there are additional opt-in mitigations to disable hyper threading and enable microcode-based mitigations for all processes by default. Details of the mitigations can be found at https://support.apple.com/kb/HT210107.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209571 (Oracle Linux 8 : virt:kvm_utils3 (ELSA-2024-12792)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172312 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2019:1243-1)).
