FreeBSD up to 11.2/11.3/12.0 Packet Filter IPv6 Packet input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD up to 11.2/11.3/12.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Packet Filter. The manipulation as part of a IPv6 Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In FreeBSD 11.3-PRERELEASE and 12.0-STABLE before r347591, 11.2-RELEASE before 11.2-RELEASE-p10, and 12.0-RELEASE before 12.0-RELEASE-p4, a bug in the pf IPv6 fragment reassembly logic incorrectly uses the last extension header offset from the last received packet instead of the first packet allowing maliciously crafted IPv6 packets to cause a crash or potentially bypass the packet filter.

The bug was discovered 05/14/2019. The weakness was released 05/15/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-5597 since 01/07/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
