Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.13 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component tun Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the tun subsystem in the Linux kernel before 4.13.14, dev_get_valid_name is not called before register_netdevice. This allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and panic) via an ioctl(TUNSETIFF) call with a dev name containing a / character. This is similar to CVE-2013-4343.
The weakness was published 05/17/2019 by Alex (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-7191 since 02/17/2018. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172481 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2019:1527-1) (Sad SACK)).
