A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component DHTML Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Race condition in the memory management routines in the DHTML object processor in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malicious web page or HTML e-mail, aka "DHTML Object Memory Corruption Vulnerability".
The bug was discovered 10/25/2004. The weakness was disclosed 04/12/2005 by Berend-Jan Wever (3APA3A) as MS05-020 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0553 since 02/26/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ZIP Archive and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at edup.tudelft.nl. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 169 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100025 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS05-020)).
Applying the patch MS05-020 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3553. In this case the pattern NULL is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3378.
