Apache Zookeeper up to 3.4.13/3.5.0-alpha to 3.5.4-beta getACL Hash permission

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache Zookeeper up to 3.4.13/3.5.0-alpha to 3.5.4-beta. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function getACL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission vulnerability (Hash). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-275. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

An issue is present in Apache ZooKeeper 1.0.0 to 3.4.13 and 3.5.0-alpha to 3.5.4-beta. ZooKeeper?s getACL() command doesn?t check any permission when retrieves the ACLs of the requested node and returns all information contained in the ACL Id field as plaintext string. DigestAuthenticationProvider overloads the Id field with the hash value that is used for user authentication. As a consequence, if Digest Authentication is in use, the unsalted hash value will be disclosed by getACL() request for unauthenticated or unprivileged users.

The bug was discovered 05/20/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at zookeeper.apache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-0201 since 11/14/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/11/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1222 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176944 (Debian Security Update for zookeeper (DLA 1801-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
