Wireshark up to 3.0.1 Dissection Engine epan/packet.c Packet code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Wireshark. This affects an unknown function of the file epan/packet.c of the component Dissection Engine. The manipulation as part of Packet leads to code injection. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-12295. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the file epan/packet.c of the component Dissection Engine. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Wireshark 3.0.0 to 3.0.1, 2.6.0 to 2.6.8, and 2.4.0 to 2.4.14, the dissection engine could crash. This was addressed in epan/packet.c by restricting the number of layers and consequently limiting recursion.

The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-12295 since 05/23/2019. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371804 (Wireshark dissection engine crash Vulnerability(wnpa-sec-2019-19)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
