A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Font File Handler. Buffer overflow in the font processing component of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP SP1 and SP2, and Windows Server 2003 allows local users to gain privileges via a specially-designed application.
The bug was discovered 04/12/2005. The weakness was published 04/12/2005 by John Heasman with NGSSoftware as MS05-018 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0060 since 01/11/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

Applying the patch MS05-018 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
