Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Digium Asterisk 12.0.0/12.1.0/12.1.1/12.2.0/12.3.0 (Communications System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component SIP Timeout Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The PJSIP Channel Driver in Asterisk Open Source before 12.3.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (deadlock) by terminating a subscription request before it is complete, which triggers a SIP transaction timeout.
The weakness was released 06/12/2014 by Mark Michelson as AST-2014-008 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at downloads.digium.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4048 since 06/12/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
When a SIP transaction timeout caused a subscription to be terminated, the action taken by Asterisk was guaranteed to deadlock the thread on which SIP requests are serviced. Note that this behavior could only happen on established subscriptions, meaning that this could only be exploited if an attacker bypassed authentication and successfully subscribed to a real resource on the Asterisk server.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76089 (Asterisk PJSIP Channel Driver Multiple DoS Vulnerabilities (AST-2014-005 / AST-2014-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc..
Upgrading to version 12.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at downloads.asterisk.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The socket-servicing thread is now no longer capable of dispatching synchronous tasks to other threads since that may result in deadlocks.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93795), Tenable (76089), SecurityFocus (BID 68032†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030428†). Additional details are provided at issues.asterisk.org. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-13588. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
