Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apache OpenOffice up to 1.1.4 (Office Suite Software). Affected is the function StgCompObjStream::Load of the component DOC Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The StgCompObjStream::Load function in OpenOffice.org OpenOffice 1.1.4 and earlier allocates memory based on 16 bit length values, but process memory using 32 bit values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a DOC document with certain length values, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 03/30/2005. The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2005 with AD-LAB (Website). The advisory is available at openoffice.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-0941 since 03/31/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
