Vera VeraEdge/Veralite UPnP Service /port_3480 ReadFileIntoBuffer parameters path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The impacted element is the function FileUtils::ReadFileIntoBuffer of the file /port_3480 of the component UPnP Service. Performing a manipulation of the argument parameters as part of Query String results in path traversal. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2017-9382. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to use restrictive firewalling.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Vera VeraEdge and Veralite (the affected version is unknown). This affects the function FileUtils::ReadFileIntoBuffer of the file /port_3480 of the component UPnP Service. The manipulation of the argument parameters as part of a Query String leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered on Vera VeraEdge 1.7.19 and Veralite 1.7.481 devices. The device provides UPnP services that are available on port 3480 and can also be accessed via port 80 using the url "/port_3480". It seems that the UPnP services provide "file" as one of the service actions for a normal user to read a file that is stored under the /etc/cmh-lu folder. It retrieves the value from the "parameters" query string variable and then passes it to an internal function "FileUtils::ReadFileIntoBuffer" which is a library function that does not perform any sanitization on the value submitted and this allows an attacker to use directory traversal characters "../" and read files from other folders within the device.

The weakness was shared 06/17/2019 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-9382 since 06/02/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling .
