A vulnerability has been found in Sun SunOS up to 4.1psr A (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file /etc/crash of the component kmem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
sun sunos 4.1 through 4.1.3 allows local attackers to gain root access via insecure permissions on files and directories such as crash.
The weakness was disclosed 02/03/1993 with CERT as CA-93.03 as not defined advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-1507. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 4.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
