Cisco Telepresence Codec/Collaboration Endpoint Cisco Discovery Protocol CDP Packet os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Cisco Telepresence Codec and Collaboration Endpoint. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component Cisco Discovery Protocol Handler. Performing a manipulation as part of CDP Packet results in os command injection. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2019-1878. The attacker must have access to the local network to execute the attack. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Cisco Telepresence Codec and Collaboration Endpoint (Unified Communication Software) (version now known). This affects some unknown processing of the component Cisco Discovery Protocol Handler. The manipulation as part of a CDP Packet leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) implementation for the Cisco TelePresence Codec (TC) and Collaboration Endpoint (CE) Software could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to inject arbitrary shell commands that are executed by the device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of received CDP packets. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted CDP packets to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary shell commands or scripts on the targeted device.

The weakness was disclosed 06/20/2019 as cisco-sa-20190619-tele-shell-i as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-1878 since 12/06/2018. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
