cURL up to 7.65.1 OpenSSL Engine C:/usr/local/ code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in cURL up to 7.65.1. This impacts an unknown function of the file C:/usr/local/ of the component OpenSSL Engine Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to code injection. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2019-5443. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in cURL up to 7.65.1 (Network Utility Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file C:/usr/local/ of the component OpenSSL Engine Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A non-privileged user or program can put code and a config file in a known non-privileged path (under C:/usr/local/) that will make curl <= 7.65.1 automatically run the code (as an openssl "engine") on invocation. If that curl is invoked by a privileged user it can do anything it wants.

The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-5443 since 01/04/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
