A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mailvelope up to 3.2.x. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Key Import. The manipulation as part of a Message leads to a key management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-320. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Mailvelope prior to 3.3.0 accepts or operates with invalid PGP public keys: Mailvelope allows importing keys that contain users without a valid self-certification. Keys that are obviously invalid are not rejected during import. An attacker that is able to get a victim to import a manipulated key could claim to have signed a message that originates from another person.
The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2019 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-9148 since 02/25/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
Upgrading to version 3.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
