The issue has been introduced in 03/01/1993. The weakness was presented 12/05/1996 by Hoss Firooznia (FIRST) with SGI (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at patches.sgi.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with SGI. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-1401. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement.
