This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-13623. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. Additionally, an exploit exists.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in NSA Ghidra up to 9.0.4 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file RestoreTask.java. The manipulation with the input value ../ leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In NSA Ghidra through 9.0.4, path traversal can occur in RestoreTask.java (from the package ghidra.app.plugin.core.archive) via an archive with an executable file that has an initial ../ in its filename. This allows attackers to overwrite arbitrary files in scenarios where an intermediate analysis result is archived for sharing with other persons. To achieve arbitrary code execution, one approach is to overwrite some critical Ghidra modules, e.g., the decompile module.
The weakness was released 07/17/2019. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-13623 since 07/16/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
