A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Eclipse OpenJ9 up to 0.14. Affected is the function String.getBytes. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. In Eclipse OpenJ9 prior to 0.15, the String.getBytes(int, int, byte[], int) method does not verify that the provided byte array is non-null nor that the provided index is in bounds when compiled by the JIT. This allows arbitrary writes to any 32-bit address or beyond the end of a byte array within Java code run under a SecurityManager.
The weakness was disclosed 07/17/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.eclipse.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-11772 since 05/06/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 0.15 eliminates this vulnerability.
