Netscape Communicator up to 4.51 view-source path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Netscape Communicator up to 4.51 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component view-source. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

the view-source cgi program allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) attack.

The weakness was presented 02/01/1997. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-1999-0174. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10294 (Multiple Vendor view_source CGI Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10021 (CGI view-source Directory Traversal Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 848. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 970.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (291), Exploit-DB (20568), Tenable (10294), SecurityFocus (BID 2251†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-677†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
