Linux Kernel up to 5.2.2 drivers/block/floppy.c setup_format_params divide by zero

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.2.2. Affected by this issue is the function setup_format_params of the file drivers/block/floppy.c. Such manipulation leads to divide by zero. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-14284. An attack has to be approached locally. There is no exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.2.2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function setup_format_params of the file drivers/block/floppy.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a divide by zero vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-369. The product divides a value by zero. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel before 5.2.3, drivers/block/floppy.c allows a denial of service by setup_format_params division-by-zero. Two consecutive ioctls can trigger the bug: the first one should set the drive geometry with .sect and .rate values that make F_SECT_PER_TRACK be zero. Next, the floppy format operation should be called. It can be triggered by an unprivileged local user even when a floppy disk has not been inserted. NOTE: QEMU creates the floppy device by default.

The weakness was shared 07/26/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-14284 since 07/26/2019. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
