Details
A vulnerability has been found in Sun Solaris 2.3/2.4/2.5/2.5.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component PAM Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in (1) pluggable authentication module (PAM) on Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.5 and (2) unix_scheme in Solaris 2.4 and 2.3 allows local users to gain root privileges via programs that use these modules such as passwd, yppasswd, and nispasswd.
The bug was discovered 02/25/1997. The weakness was released 05/13/1997 by Cristian Schipor as 00139 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-1158. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 77 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7432), Exploit-DB (341), SecurityFocus (BID 201†) and OSVDB (8216†). Additional details are provided at ftp.auscert.org.au. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
