SGI IRIX up to 6.4 Login LOOKUP privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX up to 6.4 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Login Handler. The manipulation of the argument LOOKUP with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

irix login program with a nonzero lockout parameter allows creation or damage to files.

The issue has been introduced in 09/01/1993. The weakness was released 05/26/1997 by David Hedley as confirmed patch (Website). The advisory is shared at patches.sgi.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0036. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1363 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (557), Exploit-DB (336), SecurityFocus (BID 392†), OSVDB (990†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-555†). ciac.org is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-13905 and VDB-13903. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
