A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in libvirtd up to 4.10.0/5.4.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this issue is the function virDomainSaveImageGetXMLDesc of the component API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. It was discovered that libvirtd before versions 4.10.1 and 5.4.1 would permit read-only clients to use the virDomainSaveImageGetXMLDesc() API, specifying an arbitrary path which would be accessed with the permissions of the libvirtd process. An attacker with access to the libvirtd socket could use this to probe the existence of arbitrary files, cause denial of service or cause libvirtd to execute arbitrary programs.
The weakness was shared 07/30/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-10161 since 03/27/2019. The exploitation is known to be easy.
