Symantec Endpoint Protection, prior to 14.2 RU1 & 12.1 RU6 MP10 and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition, prior to 12.1 RU6 MP10c (12.1.7491.7002), may be susceptible to a privilege escalation vulnerability, which is a type of issue whereby an attacker may attempt to compromise the software application to gain elevated access to resources that are normally protected from an application or user.
The weakness was shared 07/31/2019 by Kyriakos Economou (kyREcon) with Nettitude as SYMSA1487 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.symantec.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-12750 since 06/06/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition may be susceptible to a privilege escalation vulnerability, which is a type of issue whereby an attacker may attempt to compromise the software application to gain elevated access to resources that are normally protected from an application or user.
A public exploit has been developed by Kyriakos Economou and been published 5 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at labs.nettitude.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 12.1 RU10 or 14.2 RU1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. The security advisory contains the following remark:
The mentioned issue was validated by the product team engineers. A Symantec Endpoint Protection update, version 14.2 RU1, and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition update, version 12.1 RU6 MP10c (12.1.7491.7002), have been released which address the aforementioned issue. The latest releases and patches for Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition are available to customers through normal support channels. At this time, Symantec is not aware of any exploitations or adverse customer impact from these issues.
