A vulnerability was found in SGI IRIX 6.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component SpaceWare. The manipulation of the argument HOSTNAME as part of a Environment Variable leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. spaceball program in spaceware 7.3 v1.0 in irix 6.2 allows local users to gain root privileges by setting the hostname environmental variable to contain the commands to be executed.
The issue has been introduced in 03/01/1996. The weakness was disclosed 08/20/1997 by J.A. Guitierrez as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1399. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
