Linux Kernel 2.6.20.1 tftp path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.20.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component tftp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

linux implementations of tftp would allow access to files outside the restricted directory.

The issue has been introduced in 02/05/2007. The weakness was presented 09/01/1997 by Aviram Jenik. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0183. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18262 (TFTP Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38064 (TFTP Daemon Theft of '/etc/passwd' file).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 518.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (308), Tenable (18262), SecurityFocus (BID 6198†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-703†). See VDB-13637, VDB-19995, VDB-46098 and VDB-46068 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
