A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in BSD 2.0.4/2.1/4.4/6.2. This issue affects the function ioctl/fcntl of the component Asynchronous I/O Handler. The manipulation as part of a Process ID leads to a credentials management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-255. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The asynchronous I/O facility in 4.4 BSD kernel does not check user credentials when setting the recipient of I/O notification, which allows local users to cause a denial of service by using certain ioctl and fcntl calls to cause the signal to be sent to an arbitrary process ID.
The weakness was shared 09/15/1997 by Alan Peakall (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openbsd.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1214. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
