Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component Hyper-V Network Switch. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
A denial of service vulnerability exists when Microsoft Hyper-V Network Switch on a host server fails to properly validate input from a privileged user on a guest operating system. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could cause the host server to crash. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker who already has a privileged account on a guest operating system, running as a virtual machine, could run a specially crafted application that causes a host machine to crash. The update addresses the vulnerability by modifying how virtual machines access the Hyper-V Network Switch.
The weakness was published 08/13/2019 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-0715 since 11/26/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely.
