Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows 7 SP1/Server 2018 R2 SP1/Server 2018 SP2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Win32k. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in Windows when the Windows kernel-mode driver fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would first have to log on to the system. An attacker could then run a specially crafted application that could exploit the vulnerability and take control of an affected system. The update addresses this vulnerability by correcting how the Windows kernel-mode driver handles objects in memory.
The weakness was shared 08/13/2019 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-1169 since 11/26/2018. The attack may be launched remotely.
