A vulnerability was found in PHP 1.0/2.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file mlog. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. cgi php mlog script allows an attacker to read any file on the target server.
The weakness was disclosed 10/19/1997 by Bryan Berg as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-1999-0346. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. By approaching the search of inurl:mlog it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15708 (PHP < 3.0 mylog.html/mlog.html Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10057 (PHP/FI mylog/mlog Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1119.
