Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.10 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ovl_posix_acl_create of the file fs/overlayfs/dir.c of the component overlayfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability was found in Linux kernel's, versions up to 3.10, implementation of overlayfs. An attacker with local access can create a denial of service situation via NULL pointer dereference in ovl_posix_acl_create function in fs/overlayfs/dir.c. This can allow attackers with ability to create directories on overlayfs to crash the kernel creating a denial of service (DOS).
The weakness was disclosed 08/15/2019 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-10140 since 03/27/2019. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
