Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 7/8/9 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function font.alias of the component Xprt Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 02/10/2004. The weakness was disclosed 04/18/2005 by Greg MacManus with Sun Microsystems Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0083. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
