A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX up to 4.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component digest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. vulnerability in digest in aix 4.3 allows printq users to gain root privileges by creating and/or modifing any file on the system.

The issue has been introduced in 08/12/1994. The weakness was presented 01/21/1998 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1487. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
