Details
A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD and OpenBSD (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Sysctl. The manipulation as part of a Routed Packet leads to a authentication spoofing vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-290. This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The system configuration control (sysctl) facility in BSD based operating systems OpenBSD 2.2 and earlier, and FreeBSD 2.2.5 and earlier, does not properly restrict source routed packets even when the (1) dosourceroute or (2) forwarding variables are set, which allows remote attackers to spoof TCP connections.
The weakness was released 02/01/1998 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openbsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-0305. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
