Details
A vulnerability has been found in TLS Protocol and DTLS Protocol and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component MAC Check Handler. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability (Lucky Thirteen). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The TLS protocol 1.1 and 1.2 and the DTLS protocol 1.0 and 1.2, as used in OpenSSL, OpenJDK, PolarSSL, and other products, do not properly consider timing side-channel attacks on a MAC check requirement during the processing of malformed CBC padding, which allows remote attackers to conduct distinguishing attacks and plaintext-recovery attacks via statistical analysis of timing data for crafted packets, aka the "Lucky Thirteen" issue.
The bug was discovered 02/06/2013. The weakness was released 09/24/2019 by Nadhem AlFardan, Kenny Paterson, Royal Holloway and Wendy Parrington with United Utilities (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0169 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70460 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (October 2013 CPU) (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167437 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for compat-openssl097g (SUSE-SU-2014:1557-2)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (70460), SecurityFocus (BID 57778†) and Secunia (SA53623†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7600, VDB-8924, VDB-9323 and VDB-10298. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
