Details
A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS and IOS XE (Router Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Ident Protocol Handler. The manipulation as part of a TCP Connection leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability in the Ident protocol handler of Cisco IOS and IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload. The vulnerability exists because the affected software incorrectly handles memory structures, leading to a NULL pointer dereference. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by opening a TCP connection to specific ports and sending traffic over that connection. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.
The weakness was released 09/25/2019 as cisco-sa-20190925-identd-dos as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com.
