Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in D-Link DIR-655C, DIR-866L, DIR-652 and DHP-1565 (Router Operating System) (affected version not known). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Common Gateway Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unauthenticated remote code execution occurs in D-Link products such as DIR-655C, DIR-866L, DIR-652, and DHP-1565. The issue occurs when the attacker sends an arbitrary input to a "PingTest" device common gateway interface that could lead to common injection. An attacker who successfully triggers the command injection could achieve full system compromise. Later, it was independently found that these are also affected: DIR-855L, DAP-1533, DIR-862L, DIR-615, DIR-835, and DIR-825.
The weakness was disclosed 09/27/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-16920 since 09/27/2019. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/07/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as attacked. This issue was added on 03/25/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 04/15/2022:
The impacted product is end-of-life and should be disconnected if still in use. There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
