LakeWeb Filemail CGI script allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the recipient email address.
The weakness was disclosed 11/09/1998 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-1999-1154. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10024 (Script filemail.pl Remote Execution Vulnerability).
