Details
A vulnerability has been found in NSA Ghidra up to 9.0.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file Features/BytePatterns/src/main/java/ghidra/bitpatterns/info/FileBitPatternInfoReader.java of the component Experimental Mode. The manipulation as part of a XML Document leads to a xml injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-91. The product does not properly neutralize special elements that are used in XML, allowing attackers to modify the syntax, content, or commands of the XML before it is processed by an end system. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
NSA Ghidra through 9.0.4, when experimental mode is enabled, allows arbitrary code execution if the Read XML Files feature of Bit Patterns Explorer is used with a modified XML document. This occurs in Features/BytePatterns/src/main/java/ghidra/bitpatterns/info/FileBitPatternInfoReader.java. An attack could start with an XML document that was originally created by DumpFunctionPatternInfoScript but then directly modified by an attacker (for example, to make a java.lang.Runtime.exec call).
The weakness was shared 09/28/2019. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-16941 since 09/28/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
