A vulnerability was found in Symantec Mail Security up to 4.1.4.30 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component RAR Archive Handler. The bug was discovered 04/27/2005. The weakness was disclosed 04/28/2005 by André Jerleke (Phiberz) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityresponse.symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1346 since 04/28/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38427 (Symantec AntiVirus RAR Archive Scan Evasion Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
