Details
A vulnerability has been found in MatrixSSL up to 4.2.1 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file crypto/pubkey/ecc_math.c of the component ECDSA Signature Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a risky encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-327. The product uses a broken or risky cryptographic algorithm or protocol. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
MatrixSSL 4.2.1 and earlier contains a timing side channel in ECDSA signature generation. This allows a local or a remote attacker, able to measure the duration of hundreds to thousands of signing operations, to compute the private key used. The issue occurs because crypto/pubkey/ecc_math.c scalar multiplication leaks the bit length of the scalar.
The weakness was presented 10/03/2019 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-13629 since 07/17/2019. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
