Details
A vulnerability was found in LZ4 up to 1.9.1. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function LZ4_write32. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
LZ4 before 1.9.2 has a heap-based buffer overflow in LZ4_write32 (related to LZ4_compress_destSize), affecting applications that call LZ4_compress_fast with a large input. (This issue can also lead to data corruption.)
The weakness was released 10/14/2019. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-17543 since 10/14/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 242130 (Oracle Linux 8 : lz4 (ELSA-2025-11035)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 1.9.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (242130) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1550). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
