A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Apache htdigest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in (1) xpmParseColors in parse.c, (2) ParseAndPutPixels in create.c, and (3) ParsePixels in parse.c for libXpm before 6.8.1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed XPM image file.
The weakness was published 05/04/2005 by JxT with SNOsoft (Website). The advisory is shared for download at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0687 since 07/13/2004. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18189 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2005-005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 95006 (Sun Solaris libXpm Multiple Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
