A vulnerability has been found in VMware vCenter Server Appliance up to 6.5/6.7 (Server Management Software) and classified as problematic. Sensitive information disclosure vulnerability resulting from a lack of certificate validation during the File-Based Backup and Restore operations of VMware vCenter Server Appliance (6.7 before 6.7u3a and 6.5 before 6.5u3d) may allow a malicious actor to intercept sensitive data in transit over FTPS and HTTPS. A malicious actor with man-in-the-middle positioning between vCenter Server Appliance and a backup target may be able to intercept sensitive data in transit during File-Based Backup and Restore operations.
The weakness was disclosed 10/28/2019. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-5537 since 01/07/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1587.003 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
