A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Finder. The AppleScript Editor in Mac OS X 10.3.9 does not properly display script code for an applescript: URI, which can result in code that is different than the actual code that would be run, which could allow remote attackers to trick users into executing malicious code via certain URI characters such as NULL, control characters, and homographs.
The bug was discovered 02/18/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/04/2005 by Henrik Dalgaard (echo) with Echo One (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1331 since 04/27/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18189 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2005-005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115060 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2005-005 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2005-05-03)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
