A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX up to 4.2.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the file /tmp/ibmsupt of the component snap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. snap command in AIX before 4.3.2 creates the /tmp/ibmsupt directory with world-readable permissions and does not remove or clear the directory when snap -a is executed, which could allow local users to access the shadowed password file by creating /tmp/ibmsupt/general/passwd before root runs snap -a.
The weakness was disclosed 02/17/1999 by Larry W. Cashdollar (@_larry0) with Vapid Labs as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1405. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
